How was my day during Dog's Day Out on August 29th?

• The car ride was really good. I was put into the front seat and just sat there. I did put my nose out the window and that was cool.
• We went to the Bangor City Forest for a long walk. No pulling, just strolling along taking in all the smells. Anytime we met somebody on the trail, we would step aside and let them go by. Most of the time I was on a slack leash, I never did pull. There were other dogs, children, bikes, joggers and they all went by without a blink. Some of the other dogs wanted to meet me, but the Mrs. said "No, this dog came to the shelter as a stray. I don't know how she will react." I say, look at me - slack leash, wagging tail, I think yes they could at least say "Hi". Oh well, maybe another time. The squeals of children made my tail wag, but when we saw them it wasn't that big a deal. The bikers and joggers flew by so fast I barely noticed them. Lastly in the parking lot somebody finally asked to pat me, yes that was a treat!!!
•  Once inside the Littlefield home, I ran from room to room - never jumping on the furniture, I know better than that. I even ran up and down the stairs. They do have plenty of toys. It seems as though the other dogs were not partial to stuffed animals. Well I am - especially if they have a squeaker in them. Rumor has it that I tear up the stuffed animals at the shelter. Well after a few hours - this little stuffed animal was only missing one little paw.
• If you want to learn from the Littlefield's experience, here are a few of the words they found work:
• Sit / Stay / Down - those are the easy ones all dogs know. Well all the best behaved ones.
• Drop it. They kept saying "Out" and I couldn't figure out what they were talking about. 
• Leave it. Another no brainer. They loved using this command and were amazed that they would say "Down", then they would put a piece of chicken right in front of me and then they would say "Leave it". Guess what - I left it. Then came the best part - "Take it"!!!
• Quiet. They left me outside (tied up, of course) just to see what I would do. I didn't like it and wanted them to know that I wanted to be with them, so I did a little bit of whining (maybe a lot of whining). They said "Quiet" and I went and laid down very quietly. They couldn't believe it, so they had to try this test a few more times. Yes, I passed.
• Speaking of passing tests - I passed them all with flying colors. The only problem I had was the Littlefields don't like to play pull and tug with the toys and I love this game. Once they started saying "Drop it, leave it", we were all set - no more pulling.
• The ride back to the shelter went smoothly. I decided stretching out in the backseat was very relaxing after such a busy day.

Jasmine Gets Adopted

This was a great day at the Bangor Humane Society with many adoptions and Jasmine was part of the celebration.  Jasmine has been adopted - YEAH!!!  Jasmine, we wish you and your new family our best!  FYI - you can see more about Jasmine on the post of August 14th.

Now the dilemma - who will I now take out for Dog's Day Out.  I don't think I'll have to look hard, since there are many great dogs at this shelter.

Bandit gets Adopted

Yeah - Bandit found his forever home on August 26, 2010.  I'm sorry to say I can't speak for Bandit any longer, but I'm sure he is also saying "YEAH!!!"

He will be missed in the Littlefield household.

Another Sleep-Over on August 24, 2010

 Boy just as the night was starting to be going my way - I got sprayed by a skunk. Then I get thrown in the tub and rinsed off, before the Mrs. read the direction to Skunk Off - do not give a bath / do not get pet wet!!! Oh well, surprisingly once I was thrown in the tub with all limbs stretched out resisting this adventure, I realized that baths are not that bad. I think I would have loved the soaping up part and being rubbed down. Well that didn't happen. Out of the tub - Skunk Off put on full strength (per directions) and I am starting to smell a bit better.

When I was picked up tonight for my overnight, I think I really disappointed the Littlefields.  You see I showed how misbehaved I've been at the shelter - at their house I am the perfect dog. But I can't help it - I hate all the barking those other dogs make. The Littlefields were also very surprised to see how mean I was to the dogs walking by my kennel. When I am out with them, we have encountered dogs at a distance and I always whimper making it appear as I would love to meet them. I think I would, but while at the shelter I know those dogs are making so much racket that I can't get any sleep.

Did I mention sleep? At this time, I love to sleep!!! I also had an overnight last night and can't believe I wasted it sleeping. You've got to remember, it's hard to get much sleep at the shelter. We did go for a couple of walks and they went great - no skunks, so that was really good.

Bandit's Sleep-Over on August 20th

I can't believe I'm still at the shelter and I think this also surprises more than a few folks. But tonight was a special night - full of treats, walks and sleepovers.

• First we went for a walk in the City Forest which is full of nice smells. We met a few humans, but none of any interest. When driving out I caught the eye of a few dogs. I did a few barks saying "Hi, it's me Bandit" and then I started whining. I wonder what would have happened if I were actually to meet these dogs.

• It seems as though the Littlefields call Friday night snack night - I call it a night with plenty of treats. I can only imagine how they treat their grandchildren. Was I well behaved - you bet. I did not beg - just sat patiently waiting for the next treat. I will say I was selective with the treats - why do they feel they must hide things in the Kong?

• I have a feeling they don't think the name Bandit fits me. She kept calling me Chance - I've seen the movie Homeward Bound and don't think I'm mischievous like that dog was. Although I am pretty happy-go-lucky once I'm out of the shelter.

• Did I say happy-go-lucky? Well I had a few puppy bursts while out in the back yard, but was never out of control. You should have seen me go - this way, that way and then this way again. It was too much fun.

• Well all that running sure did make me tired. When they went upstairs to call it a night, they said "stay" and you bet I stayed right on my bed all night. I did not even whimper or whine. Remember, my previous owners said I whined. Well, maybe that was my old self, because no more whining for me.

• You may catch me whining in my kennel here at the shelter, but you'd whine too if you had to listen to barking dogs all day long!!!

• Lastly I want you all to know that I am a very well behaved dog who knows his manners!!!  If you don't believe me - ask the Littlefields or any of the staff at the Bangor Humane Society.

Bandit

How was my day out on August 15th:

• The car ride was great once I settled down in the front seat. First I was put in the back of a Subaru and quickly jumped into the front, then returned to the back. Then when the car was put in gear, I decided the front was where I wanted to be.

• I was on my best behavior, but it seems as that is just me - a good dog.

 

• If your garden has that nice tall grass in it, I would love to meet you. I fell in love with the garden and had a hard time resisting this grass. I was bribed with Kongs, belly rubs, etc - but I kept remembering that nice tall grass waiting for me.

• I don't understand people that would invite a dog over and then decide to eat a meal in front of him. They did give me the Kong thing (again), but.....     Did I beg???   Not really. I did go over to check out what was on the plate, but when I was told to "leave it" and given the pointing finger I went and laid down. To heck with the Kong, I don't need to be bribed in order not to beg.

• Did I pass the test on sit / stay / down? Well, I don't like to sit. Either I don't feel comfortable or maybe that's just what I wanted them to think (when I sit without any command, I tend to sit off to the side). I did great with stay!!! and down - well I don't think they were persistent enough. I also took my rewards very gently - but it's not all about the treat. I will say this when it comes to obedience - I know that no means no!!!

• I really like to walk and do very well on the leash. I was so good that we were able to use the Flexi; which I did very well with - I never even pulled to the end of the Flexi. We ended up walking on a path that lead to a field that was over my head. I don't think they realized how tall this grass was, but running and jumping in it made me very tired.

• I did mention that I was tired. Once we returned to the house, it was definitely time for a nap. My previous owners mentioned that I had some separation problems when left outside alone - I think they might have said I was a whiner. I stayed outside here with no problems. Maybe it's because there was nothing special going on inside - no children to play with, etc.

• The car ride back was great!!! All they needed to do, was say "stay" when putting me in the front seat - too bad they didn't think of that earlier. I loved sticking my nose out the window, but then I also loved curling up in the front seat. I do think car rides are a nice treat!!!

If you ask, I think you will be told that I am very sweet and a really great well behaved dog!!!

How was my day out on August 13th:

• First of all, I'm a pretty big dog and didn't really fit in the front seat of the car very comfortably - but all in all the ride was okay going. Coming back I was able to ride in the back and that was much better. I do appear to like car rides.
• At the beginning, I could not settle down - panting, pulling and just plain not being the best dog. We went for a walk and I know there were thoughts that I should have a harness since I was really pulling hard.
• Once we went for a walk and I settled down, I was really a great dog. I really like being inside - I loved laying on the cold floor with my back legs behind me. If you ever wanted a real live bear rug (that was actually a dog), I would be great for you.
• Did I pass the test on sit / stay / down? You bet I did. I also took my rewards very gently - treats are always the best. I don't understand why they hide them in the Kong thing - I like them much better when you just hand them to me.
• On our second walk, I was much better and the thought of harnesses went away and the flexi leash was brought out. I did some pulling, but was much easier to control.
• When we arrived back at the shelter, I was back to my old self:( I was pulling, jumping and just being very rude. I wanted everybody to know - I am much better outside this place and while I'm here my bad manners are going to come out!!!
